Somatic Experiencing®

A body-based approach to nervous system regulation and trauma processing

Difficult experiences are part of life, and in most cases, we're able to move past them and carry on. But sometimes an experience overwhelms the nervous system's ability to process and integrate it. When that happens, even once the danger has passed, the body and nervous system can keep reacting as though it were still present.

Trauma isn't defined only by the event itself, but by how the experience is perceived and processed by the nervous system. Two people can go through the same situation and still be affected very differently, depending on their available resources and the body's capacity to integrate what happened.

"Trauma is a fact of life, but it doesn't have to be a life sentence."

— Peter A. Levine

Somatic Experiencing® is a body-oriented therapeutic method developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, a psychologist, biophysicist, and internationally recognized researcher known for his contributions to understanding how trauma affects the nervous system, and for developing a groundbreaking approach to renegotiating and healing trauma.

Drawing on his study of the natural survival responses observed in the animal kingdom, alongside research into the physiology of stress, Peter Levine developed this method as a therapeutic approach that supports nervous system regulation and the body's natural capacity to process and integrate difficult experiences.

His contributions are presented in books that have become touchstones in the field of trauma, including *Waking the Tiger*, *In an Unspoken Voice*, and *Healing Trauma* — works that have shaped how trauma is understood and treated in contemporary psychotherapy.

Rather than focusing solely on the story or on traumatic memories, Somatic Experiencing® pays attention to bodily sensations and the nervous system's responses. Through this approach, difficult experiences can be processed gradually, at a safe pace tailored to each person, supporting the restoration of a sense of safety, balance, and vitality.

What is Somatic Experiencing®?

Somatic Experiencing, somatic therapy, Cristina Modreanu, Focșani

Somatic Experiencing® is a body-oriented therapeutic approach aimed at regulating the nervous system and supporting the body's natural capacity to process and integrate difficult experiences.

Rather than starting from a detailed analysis of past events, the method pays attention to how experiences are felt in the present moment, through bodily sensations, breath, movement, and the body's physiological responses.

When the nervous system is able to safely complete its natural survival responses, the body gradually regains its flexibility and capacity for self-regulation. The goal isn't to erase emotions or forget difficult experiences, but to integrate them in a way that allows a return to a state of safety and balance.

How does it work?

During sessions, attention is directed toward the present experience and the signals communicated by the body. This exploration happens at a pace tailored to each person, without forcing a re-living of difficult experiences.

The process may include observing:

  • Bodily sensations
  • Breathing
  • Areas of tension and areas of comfort
  • Natural movement impulses
  • Resources that support a sense of safety

Through this gradual exploration, the nervous system is supported in processing experiences in a tolerable and safe way, activating the body's natural resources for self-regulation and healing.

How can Somatic Experiencing® support you?

This approach can be beneficial when the nervous system remains affected by difficult experiences, prolonged stress, or overwhelming events.

The method can be helpful in many situations, such as:

  • Trauma
  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Chronic stress and burnout
  • Hypervigilance and difficulty relaxing
  • Persistent body tension
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Difficulty regulating emotions
  • Periods of change or overwhelm
  • A sense that the body remains permanently on alert

Everyone responds differently to life experiences, and the therapeutic process is tailored to each person's needs, resources, and pace.

What happens in a session?

Sessions take place in a safe, collaborative setting, where the pace of the process is tailored to each person's capacity to explore their experiences in a tolerable way.

You don't need to describe every difficult event in detail for the therapeutic process to be effective. The focus is on what can be observed and processed in the present moment, through the body and the nervous system.

Throughout the sessions, we work on developing body awareness, strengthening resources, and gradually expanding the body's capacity to return to balance after experiences of stress or trauma.

Why Somatic Experiencing®?

It's one of the best-known body-oriented therapeutic approaches for working with trauma and nervous system regulation.

The method draws on knowledge from psychology, neuroscience, stress physiology, and trauma theory, and is used by trauma-focused therapists in many countries around the world.

At the heart of this approach is the belief that the body has natural resources for self-regulation and healing. Therapy works to support the activation of these resources in a safe, gentle, and gradual way, respecting each person's own pace.
